There is ongoing confusion in the industry about whether remote controlled cranes are required to have warning devices. The answer becomes clear when you look directly at OSHA and ASME B30.2 requirements.
OSHA Requirements
OSHA 1910.179(i) states that a warning device must be provided for each crane with a power traveling mechanism, except for floor-operated (pendant-operated) cranes.
Remote-controlled cranes are not floor-operated, so a warning device is required.
ASME B30.2 Requirements
ASME B30.2 Section 2-1.15.1 requires a warning device for cab- and remote-operated cranes.
For floor-operated cranes, ASME states a warning device should be provided when the operator’s ability to warn others is impaired, making it a conditional, not mandatory requirement.
Acceptable Warning Devices
ASME allows one or more of the following when required:
- Gong
- Bell, horn, or siren
- Rotating beacon
- Strobe light
No single device is mandated, as long as the warning is effective.
When the Warning Device Must Be Used
ASME B30.2 Section 2-3.1.7(e) requires operators of remote- and cab-operated cranes to activate the warning device:
- Before bridge or trolley movement
- Intermittently, when approaching personnel in the load path
If a crane is remotely controlled, a warning device is required, and operators are responsible for using it properly. Understanding this distinction helps ensure compliance, improves safety, and reduce inspection risk.
