Overhead crane load testing is a critical step in verifying safe operation and regulatory compliance. Whether a crane is new, reinstalled, repaired, or modified, understanding ASME B30.2 load test requirements helps crane owners and operators avoid unnecessary risk and downtime.

When Is Load Testing Required?
According to ASME B30.2-2.3.2, overhead and gantry cranes should be load tested prior to initial use when they are new, reinstalled, altered, repaired, or modified—as determined by a qualified person. In many cases, load testing can be limited to only the specific functions affected by the work performed.
It’s also important to note that replacement of load chain or wire rope is excluded from load testing requirements. However, an operational hoist test must still be completed before the crane is returned to service.
Load Test Weight Requirements
If a load test is conducted, ASME sets clear boundaries for the test load:
- The test load must be at least 100% of the crane or hoist rated capacity
- The test load must not exceed 125% of rated capacity, unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer or a qualified person
These limits ensure the crane is tested under real-world conditions without introducing unnecessary structural stress.
Required Load Test Procedures
ASME B30.2 outlines specific operations that must be performed during an overhead crane load test:
- Hoist the test load to confirm it is fully supported and held by the hoist brakes
- Move the load using the trolley across the full length of the bridge
- Travel the bridge the full length of the runway in both directions, with the trolley positioned near each end of the crane
- Lower, stop, and hold the load to verify proper brake function
These steps help confirm the crane can safely lift, travel, and hold its rated load.
Documentation and Compliance
When a load test is performed, a written load test report is required. This report must document the load sustained and the operations performed and should be kept on file for compliance and inspection purposes.
