A common misconception in the crane industry is that jib crane clearance requirements match those of overhead cranes. They do not. Understanding this difference is critical for proper design, inspection, and compliance.
Overhead Crane Clearance Requirements
OSHA 1910.179, which governs overhead and gantry cranes, specifies minimum clearances:
- 2 inches lateral clearance
- 3 inches overhead clearance
These are fixed measurements and are frequently referenced during inspections.
Jib Crane Clearance Requirements Under ASME B30.17
Jib cranes fall under ASME B30.17, which covers overhead cranes and monorail systems, including jib cranes. Unlike OSHA 1910.179, ASME B30.17 does not provide numeric clearance measurements.
Instead, it states that:
“Clearance shall be maintained.”
ASME B30.17 Section 17-1.2 — Clearances
Clearance must be maintained between the crane or monorail system and:
- Potential obstructions
- Other cranes operating at different elevations
This applies under all operating conditions. For new installations, ASME requires designers to consider factors such as:
- Wheel float
- Truss sag
- Bridge or trolley skewing
- Trolley position and configuration
Where walkways or passageways are present, obstructions must not be placed in a way that could endanger personnel during crane movement.
What This Means for Compliance
Because ASME B30.17 uses performance-based language, jib crane clearance must be evaluated based on real operating conditions rather than fixed measurements. This differs significantly from overhead cranes, where OSHA provides defined clearance distances.
Jib crane clearance requirements are not the same as overhead crane requirements.
Overhead cranes have OSHA-defined measurements, while jib cranes must maintain adequate clearance under all operating conditions as required by ASME B30.17.
