When maintenance involves crane runways, runway conductors, or building structures in the crane’s path of travel, ASME requires additional safeguards:
- Lockout/tagout must be performed
- Warning signs and barricades must be placed below hazard areas
- Signal persons or stops must be used if the runway remains energized
- Barriers must separate workers from adjacent crane operations
Only designated and qualified personnel are permitted to work on energized equipment, reinforcing the importance of controlled access zones.
OSHA Barricade Requirements for Overhead Cranes
OSHA reinforces these requirements under 29 CFR 1910.179(l)(2), aligning closely with ASME standards.
