What the Codes Allow

Several governing standards recognize open span wire systems as acceptable when installed correctly.

NEC Article 610.13(B) permits bare conductors made of copper, aluminum, steel, or approved alloys along crane bridges and runways when flexibility is not required.

CMAA standards align with the NEC and allow bare conductors for both runway and bridge applications, provided they are sized and installed in accordance with NEC Article 610.

OSHA 1910.179 permits open-type conductors but requires they be located or guarded to prevent contact by personnel. Guards must also be provided to prevent contact between energized conductors and hoisting ropes when contact is possible.

ASME B30.2 mirrors these requirements, emphasizing protection against inadvertent contact during normal operation and maintenance.

 

Why Insulated Conductor Systems Are Often Preferred

Although open span wires are code-compliant, insulated conductor systems are widely recommended across the crane industry.

This is largely due to:

  • Reduced risk during maintenance
  • Better support for modern crane technology

Today’s overhead cranes commonly use Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and remote-control systems, which often require dual collectors for reliable electrical continuity. Insulated conductor systems are better suited to meet these demands while improving uptime and maintenance efficiency.

Open span wires are an acceptable and compliant method of supplying power to overhead cranes when properly installed and guarded. However, for many modern applications, insulated conductor systems offer clear advantages in safety, reliability, and performance.
